From January-December 2018, artists Julie Hammond & Matthew Ariaratnam held 20 events under the wayfinding // wandering banner. From pop-ups in the Sunset Community Centre lobby to multi-day workshops and sensory walks, these events were united in their investigation of the world around us and their desire to spark curiosity in active participants of all ages. As planned, the vast majority of our events were deliberately de-skilled, requiring nothing more than tuning into existing sensorial or observational capacities and opening oneself up to the possibility to be surprised by what is already present.
Artist Bios: Matthew Ariaratnam and Julie Hammond have worked together as co-creators, sound designer/performer and dramaturg/performer in theatres and public spaces, and have made walks and public installations which explore empathy between listener-participant and the environment. Their collaborative work draws from practices of walking, improvisation, multi-modal listening, relational aesthetics, mindfulness and site-specific performance.
